Starr Regional Medical Center announced today that its Auxiliary has donated $10,000 for scholarships to students enrolled in the Practical Nursing Program at Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Athens. The donation provided four students, Jada Brewster, Sadie Burke, Stephanie Givens and Marina Santos, with scholarships to enroll in the program.
“The Starr Regional Auxiliary has raised money through its gift shops and fundraising activities throughout the year to support hospital staff and programs to ensure a positive patient experience,” said Sandra Liner, president of the Starr Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. “We are grateful we were able to assist these students reach their goals of becoming a nurse by providing scholarships, which ultimately supports the hospital’s mission of making communities healthier.”
TCAT students completed applications for the scholarships which were reviewed by Alise Holt, RN, BSN, Practical Nursing Director at TCAT Athens. Recipients were selected based on need. All funds were used to cover the cost of tuition and books for the students.
“I appreciate Starr Regional Medical Center’s willingness to invest in the TCAT Athens Practical Nursing Program and to help our students pursue their dreams of being a nurse,” said Holt. “This is an intense program and help with tuition costs can alleviate some stress for students. Students who choose TCAT Athens are not only trying to better themselves, but also give back to the community around them.”
The Practical Nursing program at TCAT Athens includes nursing classroom instruction and over 500 hours of hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of the registered nurse faculty. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, graduates are eligible to write the State Board of Nursing Examination (NCLEX-PN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
