Slack returns home to expand surgical podiatry services available in McMinn County

Starr Regional Medical Center today announced that Derek Slack, DPM, has joined its staff and will be offering surgical podiatry services, with focus on reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle, to patients in Athens and the surrounding communities. Dr. Slack, an Athens native, will see patients at Starr Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Slack home to Athens to practice at Starr Orthopedics & Sports Medicine,” said John McLain, chief executive officer of Starr Regional Medical Center. “High quality surgical podiatry will be valuable to this community, and Dr. Slack’s training at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine and residency in surgical podiatry at St. Vincent Medical Center have given him a great breadth of experience in a wide range of procedures related to the foot and ankle that people in our region need. This expertise will be important as Starr Regional Medical Center works to make our community healthier.”
Dr. Slack is a graduate of McMinn County High School, where he was captain of the 2006 Cherokee golf team. He joins the hospital’s medical staff following a three-year residency in podiatric surgery at St. Vincent Medical Center in Evansville, Ind., where he served as chief resident. He graduated magna cum laude from Lee University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 2013. In 2017, Slack graduated magna cum laude from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM), earning his doctorate in podiatric medicine. He was a recipient of the KSUCPM Merit Scholarship for academic achievements each year from 2013 through 2017.
Dr. Slack is a resident member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Podiatric Medical Association. He will begin seeing patients at Starr Orthopedics & Sports Medicine on September 1. For a referral or to schedule an appointment, please call
