February is recognized nationally as Black History Month. It is a designated time for honoring the achievements and contributions of Black Americans to U.S. culture. This annual observance grew out of a week-long celebration established by Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). It was officially expanded to a month in 1976 by President Gerald Ford who called upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
